Business Computing Qualifications - Regulations

Programmes |
 3.1 Programme Objectives | This document contains the following qualifications:
> a one semester (half-year) level 3 Certificate in Computing (CIC) programme
> a family of three programmes where each level can be completed in one year of full time study; i.e. level 6(2 years) and level 7 (3 years) at a New Zealand Polytechnic, as follows:
>> Diploma in Information and Communications Technology Level 5 (DipICT L5)
>> Diploma in Information and Communications Technology Level 6 (DipICT L6)
>> National Diploma in Business Computing (Level 7) (NDBC)

 3.1.1 Certificate In Computing (CIC)(Level 3) top | The aim of the CIC is to enhance readiness for:
> further study in computing and related fields and
> employment using computers
The holder of this qualification is entitled to use the letters CIC after their name
Note: The three diploma programmes have previously been approved by NZQA. CIC is included in this publication for the first time and is therefore, subject to approval.

 3.1.3 The Diploma In Information And Communications Technology Level 6 (DipICT L6) (Formerly Diploma in Business COmputing (DipBC)) top | The objective of the DipICT L6 is to:
"Produce graduates who have acquired detailed knowledge and skills in selected areas of ICT, enabling them to move towards further specialisation."
The holder of this qualification is entitled to use the letters DipICT L6 after their name.
Note: The award that students are entitled to will depend on which qualification their sector affiliate enrols them in for 2003; i.e. DipBC or DipICT L6. Applicants will enrol in DipICT L6 for 2004.
The National Diploma in Business COmputing (NDBC)
The objective of the NDBC is:
"To produce graduates who have acquired specialist knowledge and skills in selected areas of business computing and have proven their ability, through completion of a project, in a professional ICT environment."
The holder of this qualification is entitled to use the letters NDBC after their name.
Note: Students may be enrolled in DipBC, or DipICT L6, for 2003. Applicants must be enrolled in DipICT L6 for 2004.

 3.2 Module Categories top | The modules that make up the programmes are structured as follows:
3.2.1 CIC:
Level 2/3 |
Enhance readiness for: > further study in computing and related fields > employment using computers. |
3.2.2 Diploma:
Level 4/5 (Was 100 Level) |
Create a foundation of knowledge and skills for a higher level of work, regardless of later specialisation, and introduce specialised topics. |
Level 6 (Was 200 Level) |
Extend topic knowledge and skill to a significant level. |
Level 7 (Was 300 Level) |
Extend topic knowledge and skills to a high level. |
Note: A compulsory project at level 7 (300 Level) provides an opportunity to apply high-level skills in an actual, or closely simulated, information and communications technology work environment.

 3.3 Modules top | 3.3.1The CIC (Level 2/3) modules are each 5 credits.
3.3.2The diploma modules are each 7 credits, or multiples of 7 credits.
3.3.3Each module specifies the number of student learning hours required to achieve mastery of the module content. A five-credit module will take a student approximately fifty hours, a seven-credit module approximately seventy hours, while a fourteen-credit module will take approximately 140 hours. The education provider will ensure that delivery of the module includes the appropriate class contact time to guarantee that the module objectives can be reasonably met. It is important to note that the accreditation process is designed to ensure that consistent nationwide standards are maintained, and that an education provider must be able to demonstrate that the delivery methods used can, and do, produce the required results.
3.3.4Each programme requires a student to accrue at least the specified number of credits through completion of modules or cross-credits.

 3.4.1 Certificate in Business Computing (CBC) top | 3.4.1.1CIC requires the successful completion of 60 credits, with the following supplementary requirements:
At least 40 credits must be completed at level 3, or higher.
No more than 30 credits from any one category.
Must have representation from at least 3 of the first 5 categories, as per Table 1.

 3.4.2 Diploma in Business Computing (DIPBC) top | 3.4.2.1DipICT L5 requires the successful completion of 126 credits, with the following mandatory requirements:
At least 84 credits must be completed at level 5, or higher, excluding PJ700 (PJ300).
Compulsory modules, as in Table 2.

Notes:
1. A combination of two new compulsory programming modules, PP490 and PP590, as in Table 3, may be offered as an alternative to the PD500 and PP400 combination. If this combination is offered a pass in PP490 is compulsory for the award of DipICT L5.
2. Students wanting to do the DipICT L6 qualification, who have only done PP490 in their DipICT L5 year, will also need to complete PP590, as specified in Table 3.

 3.4.3 Diploma In Information And Communications Technology Level 6 (DipICT L6) (Formerly DipBC) top | 3.4.3.1DipICT L6 requires the successful completion of 252 credits, with the following mandatory requirements:
At least 84 credits must be completed at level 6, or higher, excluding PJ700 (PJ300).
The successful completion of DipICT L5, including
Either PD500 and PP400, or PP490 and PP590.
3.4.3.2If the DipICT L5 (formerly CBC) has already been awarded, then the credits earned for this qualification will be counted toward the requirements for DipICT L6.
3.4.3.3The appropriate body may approve direct entry to DipICT L6 for a candidate who can demonstrate work experience or qualifications equivalent to DipICT L5 (formerly CBC). Students who obtain direct entry to DipICT L6 on the basis of work experience or equivalent qualifications will not be awarded the DipICT L5 (formerly CBC).

 3.4.4 National Diploma In Business Computing (NDBC) top | 3.4.4.1NDBC requires the successful completion of 378 credits, with the following mandatory requirements:
> At least 84 credits must be completed at level 7.
> The successful completion of DipICT L6.
> The successful completion of PJ700 (PJ300) Project.
3.4.4.2If the DipICT L5 (formerly CBC) or the DipICT L6 (formerly DipBC) has already been awarded, then the credits earned for those qualifications will be counted toward the requirements for NDBC.
3.4.4.3Direct entry to the NDBC programme is expected to occur infrequently. Students who obtain direct entry to NDBC on the basis of work experience or equivalent qualifications will not be awarded the DipICT L5 (formerly CBC) or the DipICT L6 (formerly DipBC).
