LEARNING OUTCOMES The Student Will
A | 1 | Install and configure a server-based LAN. |
A | 2 | Administer a server-based LAN. |
A | 3 | Troubleshoot and correct typical problems. |
1 | LAN Installation |
> | The server-based LAN hardware (nodes) will be interconnected.
> | The server harddisk will be prepared and the network operating system (NOS) will be installed and configured.
> | The server will be configured to manage a print queue. |
2 | LAN Administration |
> | A multi-user application will be installed in an appropriate directory.
> | Several user groups with different levels of security will be configured and users will be assigned to groups.
> | The users’ login scripts will be defined and written.
> | Major command line and menu utilities, including those restricted to the administrator, will be identified and used.
> | A new user menu will be created utilising a menu utility.
> | Console utilities will be used.
> | Printers, including one attached to a separate print server, will be added.
> | The network facilities will be utilised; e.g. the user will run the multi-user application and produce hardcopy. |
3 | Fault Detection & Correction |
> | Troubleshooting of typical problems encountered on a server-based LAN will be performed.
> | LAN monitoring software will be used to analyse network performance. |
Note | ||
> | Use a product such as Novell NetWare™ or Windows NT™.
> | While it is expected that the troubleshooting requirement of section 3 will be fulfilled during the completion of sections 1 & 2, introducing faults onto the network may be necessary.
> | For LAN performance monitoring use a product such as Triticom’s™ EtherVision™. |
