The Student Will
C1Describe Local Area Network concepts.
A2Utilise the client facilities available on a server-based LAN, and be capable of basic trouble-shooting.
A3Install, configure and use a peer-to-peer network.
A4Add a workstation to a server-based LAN.
A5Install a software package onto the file server.

CONTENT

1Local Area Networks (LANs)
> The basic concepts and features of a LAN will be described.
> Access security and the limitations imposed on the client will be described.

2Server-Based LANs
> The standard functions available to a client will be explored.
> The available menu utilities will be utilised.
> Operating system and network commands (command line utilities) available to clients will be applied.
> Operating system commands that could cause problems on a network will be identified.
> Print queues will be managed.

3Peer-To-Peer LANs
> The Network Operating System (NOS) will be installed.
> Access security methods will be activated.
> The functions provided by the NOS will be utilised including sharing; hard-disk resources and remote and local printers.
> Non-technical problems typically encountered by a client will be solved.

4Workstation (Client) Installation
> A workstation (client) will be connected to the server-based LAN.
> Non-technical problems typically encountered by a client will be solved.

5Software Package Installation
> Application software will be installed (includes granting trustee rights to the appropriate directory and defining search drive maps).
> The MAP function will be utilised.
> The login script will be modified.
> A suitable process will be implemented for running the application (e.g. a menu system).
