Advanced Certificate in Business Computing (Level 6)


APL   top
Assessment of Prior Learning. The process by which a Polytechnic recognises and gives credit for learning acquired in other settings. The student is given an automatic pass (ungraded) in the equivalent course or module.


Accreditation   top
Permission to offer an approved programme, awarded by NZQA.


Assessment   top
Process carried out by the training provider to determine whether a student has gained the required skills as laid down in the validated prescriptions.


CBC   top
Certificate in Business Computing


CEO   top
Chief Executive Officer (of a Polytechnic).


CIC   top
Certificate in Computing (Level 3)


Conceded Pass   top
When a student who has otherwise shown a good overall performance narrowly fails in a subject they may be credited as having passed that subject.

LAC   top
Local (Business Computing) Advisory Committee. Each provider is strongly recommended to have an LAC consisting of a number of people working in the computing industry together with some polytechnic computing staff and management.


Mastery   top
The level of skill at which a student has reached the required standard according to the prescription. May be measured at any stage of a subject (including at the beginning). Once reached, subject is deemed to have been completed. Thus if a student can demonstrate mastery of a subject before or during the course they should not have to sit through the remaining classes for that subject.


Moderation   top
Process, organised and conducted by NACCQ, to check that assessment procedures used by a training provider do in fact measure the degree to which a student has acquired the skill being assessed, and that the level of such assessments is consistent nationwide.


Module   top
A subject area, normally 70 student learning hours and worth 7 credits.

Process of having NZPPC examine a programme proposal in terms of industry relevance and consistent standard (prior to Polytechnics applying to teach the programme). Previously known as "validation".


Programme Controller   top
An academic staff member with appropriate qualifications and experience, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the programme.
