The Student Will
C1Explain the purpose of software and how it interrelates with hardware.
A2Use the commands of a typical single-user operating system to complete simple tasks. The student will identify the differences between single-user and multi-user operating systems.
A3Apply the features of a typical word processor to simple tasks.
A4Apply the features of a typical spreadsheet to simple tasks.
A5Apply the features of a typical file management package to simple tasks.
A6Apply the features of two other types of software to simple tasks. One of these items of software should be a typical small business accounting package.

CONTENT

1  Computer Overview
The purpose of operating systems and applications programs; the relationships and interactions between these components and the hardware.

2  Operating Systems
Use of MS-DOS (or equivalent) operating system commands including directory creation and removal, changing directory, directory display, file copy, file delete, file rename, change of drive. Creation of simple batch files.

3  Word Processing

The software used may be an integrated package which includes word processing, spreadsheet and file management features, or may be separate software packages.
Suitable tasks are:
Word Processing:
- Preparation of a business letter
- Production of a two page report including bolding and underlining
Spreadsheet:
- Recipe calculation
- Chequebook balancing
File Management:
- Club member list
- Video tape catalogue

6  Other Packages
A graphics (drawing) package and a small business accounting package are recommended. Suitable tasks are:
Graphics Package:
- Production of a poster using a good sample of the features of the package
Accounting Package:
- Entering invoices and cash receipts, production of statements
