Renaming CBC |

The NACCQ executive has approved a recommendation from the CD&M; working group, made at the November meeting, that CBC becomes a level 5 diploma.
The suggestion that CBC becomes DipICT (Diploma in Information & Communication Technology) has the following rationale:
1. The proposed name change will bring the level 5 CBC qualification into line with the NZQA Framework qualifications where levels 1 to 4 are certificates and levels 5 and above are diplomas.
2. Potential computing and IT students, the majority of whom are school leavers, are
familiar with the NQF NCC level 2 & 3 quals. This will help our students better understand the relationship between level 5 diplomas currently offered by PTEs and our NDBC family of quals. (I had a recent case where a student who had just completed CBC was considering enrolling in a PTE level 5 diploma in computing...ironic considering that the courses offered were originally derived from the Blue Book).
3. ICT is the abbreviated term in common use throughout the primary and secondary school system and is becoming the term commonly used in various computing and IT publications.
Please note that while the exec. support the proposed change from a certificate to a diploma it has not agreed to the name ICT as this is still up for discussion.
No changes are planned for the DipBC and NDBC names.
The CD&M; working group invite you to comment on the proposal, which will be submitted for ratification at the 2002 conference in Hamilton.
Regards
Garry Roberton
Chair CD&M; Working Group

This sounds like a good move. The CBC needs a "lift" to maintain credibility with the PTE offering. The "Dip ICT" is certainly a new name, and fits in well with current terminology.
I support this proposal.

While I certainly agree that the change from a Certificate to a Diploma is essential I don't believe the abbreviation "ICT" has much exposure in the real world.
A quick survey of over 20 colleagues and clients showed not one knew what the abbreviation "ICT" stood for. There were a couple of good guesses but none correct.
A couple of the surveyed are constantly recruiting System Engineers etc and never recall hearing the term.

Fantastic idea, however after completing CBC I am peeved that all former students who have passed this certificate cannot apply for the ICT Diploma......stink

I did CBC in year 1999 but I have a certificate. Would it possible to upgrade and change my certificate to the new Diploma??
