News Update from UCOL
Catherine Snell-Siddle
UCOL is now a CISCO Local Network Academy. We have introduced CISCO certification into the BAppIS degree programme. Students who complete specified units within the degree can gain this international qualification. A part-time course is also being offered in 2001 called Certificate in Computer Networks Level 6. The course runs for three semesters (8-10 hours per week) and students can commence study in any semester. Students who complete this certificate will graduate with the UCOL certificate and the CISCO certification. Overseas indications are that employers are looking for employees with industry certification rather than degrees. To this end we intend to incorporate other industry certifications into the degree programme to add value to the degree.

A Weekend College has been running since 9 September 2000 at UCOL. Through the Weekend College, the Information Systems section are offering the following courses:
  • 1st year of BAppIS (full or part time)
  • National Certificate in Computing Level 2 & 3 (full or part time)
Short courses:
  • Internet Programming in Java (D280unit from BAppIS). Completion of this course leads students to the Sun Microsystems Java Programmer certification exam
  • Building E-Commerce Applications (T270 unit from BAppIS)
These courses have all been popular and we intend to run more short courses in 2001.

The Certificate in Computer Support (CCS), previously offered at Levin campus, will be offered in Palmerston North in 2001. This will run for 18 weeks each semester. The Network and Operations modules will be acknowledged as cross credits for T100 and T150 in BAppIS. It is proposed that CCS students will also be able to sit the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE) certification.

A Certificate in Electronic Commerce Level 5 is proposed for Semester Two, 2001.

A Certificate in Electronic Business Level 7 is currently being promoted and offered through the Weekend College. It will also be available as a full time, one year course in 2001.
